Article #31: Baron's deck analysis #3: K Vanderwege's "Denizens Of The Deep" deck

Well, I finally have time to type up my latest article.

As promise, I would change a water deck in my deck analysis article series (I still need a freaking name for this...LOL). Let's not waste time, and let see what the original deckbuilder want:

The deck is mostly a combination of water Strategies (with some of my own combos) I do not use the Orca though (and I really do not want to) If you do fix this deck I beg of you though please do not include non water types (except potentially magician of faith) I do not want to use breaker, or sangan, or cyber jar or Exiled force.

And let's start with the monsters:

----------------------------
Monsters 19
Amphibious Bugroth MK-3 x2
Gagagigo x2
Giga Gagagigo
Levia Dragon
Magician Of Faith
Mobious The Frost Monarch
Nightmare Penguin x3
Penguin Soldier x2
Sinister Serpent
Suijun
The Legendary Fisherman x2
Tribe Infecting Virus
Yomi Ship
----------------------------

So, no Breaker, no Critter, no Exiled Force, no Cyber Pod, right??

Well, first of all, let's look at the "must" of the high level monsters:
1. Leviadragon Daidaros
2. Ice Emperor - Mobius

You may think "that's IT??" Well, as I always said in deckbuilding, pure beatstick just do not work well...but one thing is, there can always be options for adding 1 (or 2, depends on deck) yellow beatstick, and for Waters, we have [Giga Gagagigo].

Since it's best to stick with no more than 4 tribute monsters...
-1 Suijun (This card is too hard to summon without [Legendary Ocean], and it's effect is pretty much useless)
-2 Legendary Fisherman (This card's stats stink, especially compare to the new monsters)
+1 Leviadragon - Daidaros (This card is clearly the best tribute monsters for Water deck. This card best stay at two in a deck since it's still a two-tribute monsters without [Legendary Ocean - Atlantis])

Now that take care of the big monsters, let's look at the small ones. Since the deckbuilder do not want the 4 great cards named above, if other readers want to, I would tell you which monster to "replace" it for. By the way, another thing for a deck is, being TOO THEME UP IS ALWAYS BAD. Also, being "special"/"unique" and not using staples is just a stupid move. Unless the player is playing casually (which I still recommand the use of staples), or really playing without money, I would not recommend that move.

First two victim is [Penguin Soldier]. WHY?? Well, 3x [Penguin Nightmare] is WAY more than enough (and it's too much!!). Reverse-Bounce monsters are always too slow. In replacement, we would add the BEST bouncer for water deck...
-2 Penguin Soldier
-1 Penguin Nightmare
+2 Abyss Soldier (I know it's expensive, so if you cannot find one, stay with 3x [Penguin Nightmare] and add an [Gagagigo] or [Mermaid Knight] for the other slot)
+1 Mermaid Knight (You know...this card is GOOD)

Since this deck have many Water monsters with attack 1500 or lower, [Grizzily Mother] is not a bad choice either. To find place for this cards (when you add this type of searcher, at least 2 are needed), the following change would be done:
-1 Yomi Ship (Again, flip-destroy is too slow)
+2 Grizzily Mother (another slot is from the tribute monsters)

At last, to balance out the whole thing, add some monsters like [Aqua Spirit] for faster tribute (the fun of special summoning) and an annoying effect (one less monster to attack is ANNOYING!!). At last, some monsters are just not need, Now, here's a list of the monsters after the change.

----------------------------
Tribute: 4
Leviadragon - Daidaros x2
Ice Emperor - Mobius
Giga Gagagigo (could be replace by Mobius, Breaker)

Monsters 14
Amphibious Bugroth MK-3 x2 (Or Breaker + Critter)
Gagagigo x2 (or Initiate Troops)
Nightmare Penguin x2
Abyss Soldier x2
Grizzily Mother x2
Sinister Serpent
Tribe Infecting Virus
Mermaid Knight x2 (or Aqua Spirit x2)
----------------------------
Now it's time to move to the Magic cards:
----------------------------
Magic 14
A Legendary Ocean x3
Big Wave Small Wave
Card Destruction
Change Of Heart
Giant Trunade
Heart Of Clear Water
Mystical Space Typhoon
Pot Of Greed
Premature Burial
Salvage x2
Swords Of Revealing Light
----------------------------
OK, I really have problem with people NOT using all of the staples...

OK, this deck is not THAT bad...only [Angel's Gift] is lack.

One thing is, Change of Heart?? Isn't that BAN?? Well, [Theft] over that.

Now, for the other Magic cards...let start to look.

First, Water deck MUST have 3x [Atlantis]...then other Water themed card??

Do you really need them?? First one is [Big Wave Small Wave]. People think it's good for Water deck, guess what?? It's NOT...destroy your own monsters for the same few monsters over again does not gave that much of an advantage.

Then, another common card added into a Water deck is [Salvage]. My question is, how many times a player could really get back two Water monster and have advantage?? I cannot think of much, Water do NOT have lack of monsters with the searchers (well...unless it's in late game situation, where every deck have a chance to have "no monsters" situation).

So, you may ask, what should be put in?? Well, first of all, the "downpowered" staples [Lightning Vortex]/[Earth Crush] and [Brain Control]. Then, some destruction to the defense monsters ([Shield Crush], etc.). At last, a better way to boost Water decK: GET the water field card out ASAP (aka adding [Terraforming]).

Some more optional cards are [Force Transfer] for [Grizzily Mother], or additional destruction Magic

I just want to question the original deckbuilder one question, WHY in the world [Heart of Clear Water] is added??

So, the finalize list is:
----------------------------
Magic 15
Jar of Greed
A Legendary Ocean x3
Terraforming
Brain Control
Lightning Vortex/Earth Crush
Shield Crush/Apostle of Obliteration
Mystical Space Typhoon
Pot Of Greed
Angel's Gift
Premature Burial
Swords Of Revealing Light
2x Optional Slot (Salvage, Forced Transfer, destruction Magics)
----------------------------
Let end with the Traps...
----------------------------
Traps 7
Astral Barrier x2
Draining Shield
Spirit Barrier
Tornado Wall x2
Windstorm Of Itaqua
----------------------------
OK, this Trap lineup really have a problem...

First of all, some of the cards just SUCKS no matter what. The staples Trap lineup is needed for EVERY deck...Astral Barrier would NOT help in Water deck, nor Drain Shield or Spirit Barrier (WTF?? Why even put the combo in there??). Well, Tornado Wall is only an OK card, so only 1 is needed...

The lineup:
Trap: 7
Holy Barrier - Mirror Force -
Destruction Ring
Tidal Wave
Cry of the Living Dead
Sand Tornado
Tornado Wall
(Optional Slot: Really any good effect Trap card can be add here...or theme card, whatever)

That's it for this deck. I'm busy, so maybe this article is kind of short...

Next time, I have no idea what deck we would look at...
