Article 16: Protection, Combo, and meta after ban
Yet again, Baron is back with his articles...
This time, as obvious as the title description, I would divided this article into three section...
Protection:
So, WHAT I mean by Protection?? Protection is just means, playing this game defensiviely. So, WHY I would talk about this topic. As by Kutaro Fuma, a member here, many people on R-ealms Deck Depot is doing this in their trap "lineup":
Trap:
3x Waboku
3x The other 3 Staple Trap, etc.
So, WHY start talking about it. As obvious, I really want to point out the "3x Waboku" part. You may began to ask "what's wrong with that?? That's normal, right??". Ehh...you would know my answer to that question later, but first, let's look at WHY people use 3x Waboku:
- Chainable to [Cyclone] (that's what get this card popular)
- Protect your monster for one turn
- Protect your lifes for one turn
So, that's enough reason for people think Waboku is god, right??
WRONG.
I could just contradict all the statement by:
- Cyclone/HFD is NOT god, and NEVER scare of it just because it can destroy your Traps
- One turn protection means NOTHING, you must then "god-draw" (or good top-decking) in order to turn things around
- If your opponent have field advantage over you, that card DOES NOT stop the advantage
(**IMPORTANT: I'm talking about an "Offensive" deck here, or, Chaos, Beatdown, Rush, etc.***)
So, you may ask, how I live my life and win with my deck with 0x Waboku??
The answer: Monster destruction Traps. What I mean is, instead of using Waboku, there's a BUNCH of other card that could disrute your opponent's plan more. I would not count [Holy Barrier] as one...it's ban in Japanese game starting 2 days later anyway. But, cards like [Explosive Armor] were often minus from a deck because people tend to think...WABOKU IS BETTER. It's not about destruction, it's only that, it protects you, MAKE you can have extra turn for tribute/plan...etc. So, why waste one card just for protect your life while the others could do more??
I cannot answer it...but that's all I could write to the 3x Waboku users.
BUT REMEMBER ONE THING, when I said Destruction > Protection, it DOES NOT MEAN I prefer people to use 3x [Explosive Armor]
Combos:
So, my next topic of today is combos. WHY I talk about this AGAIN and AGAIN?? I did not...here's something I observe in this day's decks:
- Putting 2x [Kotersu] in a deck for 3x Equipment
- Putting 2x Chaos Messenger in a deck just because they have 3x Light Demons and 5x Dark Demons for [Dark Necrophia] also
- Putting in [DDVD] combo just because the deck have 2-3x DDVD "bait" (I'm talking about pre-DDVD restrict environment, and probably the meta after [DDVD] release in English)
- Using Zombies, Gravekeepers together (Reborn and block reborn never work...)
- Putting in [Hell Tempest] just because the deck have 1 [Lava Golem]
- Putting in a Main-Type field card just for 6-7 of his/her monsters are that Main-Type
- Putting in 2 or more field cards for combos
- Putting in [Burst Stream] with 1 BEWD, same with other "attack" cards.
- Putting in [Sage's Jewel] in a deck just because you have a [BMG] and a [BM] in a deck, and you have [DMoC] as the main combo...
So, you know what I mean, people are putting 5x to 6x combos in ONE deck, and then call their deck "unbeatable"
Oh god...let me look at what I write on combos in a deck in my tutorial (not exact wordings..but...)
"If you want to build a Combo deck, choose ONE combo and build around it, be sure to add another "back-up" combo that could use the cards in your field combo just in case that combo don't work"
So, I would not say anything more...you know what I mean...
Meta after new ban:
Everytime a new restriction/ban list came out, the metagame would change. This time, the 2 obvious meta-deck, Chaos Control and Viral Control, are KILL. Now, every time when a "big deck" die, people would start to think which is the next dominant deck type...although the answer is none...but...
- Rush was powerup due to gone of more Mass-Destruction (thanks to Bush) and restrction of Virus, and of course, the unban of Lily.
- Field card/One M/T dependance deck power-up due to restriction of Cyclone
- Resurrection/RFG deck is back with the unban of Painful Choice (although weaken with gone of Reborn)
- Gravekeeper deck is also back b/c of rise back of Resurrection decks
So, another common things after each restriction is, they tend to replace the "gone" card with simliar cards...
Ehh...it MAY work...or is it?? Like in 3/1 ban, when [Imperial Order] is ban, MANY people replace it with [Magic Drain], or replace [Painful Choice] with 2x [Foolish Burial], etc.
So, what about this time? I foresee many [Dust Tornado] in decks, but KoJ did make a smart decision of restricting [Tidal Wave], or...I would see 3x [Tidal] in EACH and EVERY deck.
Umm...that's it for my weekly article...
